All Africa Games: BA United deny Meteors access to Patrick Asmah

first_imgAsmah together with WAFA’s Samuel Tetteh are two players from the Under-20 team who have been drafted into the Black Meteors squad as Ghana seeks to defend the Gold medal won at Maputo 2011.

B.A United are demanding the exclusion of defender Patrick Asmah from Ghana’s squad for the 2015 All-Africa Games. The left-back according to the club, has gone AWOL since his return from national team duty with the Ghana Under-20 team at this year’s Fifa World Cup in New Zealand a couple of months back only to resurface in the Black Meteors camp.B.A United, whose relegation status from Ghana’s elite division has been confirmed, are taken aback by the FA’s decision to continue to engage Asmah. The club say they placed him on indefinite suspension.“Patrick Asmah is our player; he has a contract with us,” club Chief Executive Officer Yaw Frimpong said to Angel FM. “He went to the U20 championship in the name of the club but has since failed to return to the club so we needed to apply the law by writing to the FA that he has been suspended and should not be given any call up to any of the national teams.“If a player has been suspended why should be given a call up to the Under-23 team knowing very well that we have officially written letter to you [Ghana FA] with regards to his suspension from the club,” he queried.last_img read more

10th death reported in ICE custody this year

first_imgHumanitarians and doctors are requesting better healthcare options for those in ICE custody after a 10th person has died in the matter of 6 months.Officials are reporting that the latest death occurred at a holding facility in Texas.42-year-old Ramiro Hernandez Ibarra was awaiting deportation to Mexico when he became ill and died of complications due to septic shock after being transported to the hospital. The agency did not elaborate on the circumstances surrounding his death, however, with the death toll surpassing the 8 reported deaths in 2019, humanitarians are calling for the release of nearly 23,000 who do not have criminal records or convictions.Carlos- Franco-Paredes who is a professor at the University of Colorado School of Medicine’s Infectious diseases division echoed this sentiment in an open letter about the ICE holding facilities and the coronavirus.Franco-Paredes wrote that if the coronavirus were to get into the facilities it could be lethal to both employees and detainees due to the lack of healthcare and their high density populations.“For an immigration detention center that holds 1500 detainees, we can estimate that 500-650 may acquire the infection,” Franco-Paredes ” of these, 100 to 150 individuals may develop severe disease potentially requiring admission to an intensive care until. Of these, 10-15 individuals may die from respiratory failure,” he continued.last_img read more

Camping Now Permitted in Lenape Woods

first_imgAtlantic Highlands – Lenape Woods was not always the appreciated preserved piece of nature it is now. In fact, until the 1990s, most people did not recognize it as anything other than a dump, littering it with glass, paper, cans, and old items they no longer wanted. Now, the woods are approximately 51 well-maintained acres with beautiful waterways, Many Mind Creek and Claypit Creek, trails, plants, trees, and wildlife. The borough is looking to expand awareness of the woods by sharing its treasures with others. For years, the borough prohibited camping in Lenape Woods, only allowing visitors until dusk.A new ordinance permits eligible groups, or “members of any nationally chartered youth group with a demonstrated culture of environmental awareness and conservation,” to camp overnight in the Atlantic Highlands portion of Lenape Woods. The ordinance states: “that group outdoor education for our youth will contribute to the development of environmentally conscious adults who are civically minded, tolerant of others differences and who embrace our nation’s rich diversity at all levels.”Adam Hubeny, Borough Administrator of Atlantic Highlands, said Frederick J. Rast III originally presented the idea seven years ago and has been working diligently to make it happen ever since.“Mayor Rast made a commitment to get this passed when he first took office in 2008,” said Hubeny. “And although most of the Lenape Woods Preserve is located in Middletown Township, it took this long to get on the same page with Middletown as far as rules and regulations and enforcement. Each municipality has passed resolutions supporting the camping in Lenape Woods.”As indicated in the ordinance, camping groups must have at least three adults including at least one registered adult leader who “has the appropriate level of training that the chartering organization requires to super vise outdoor activities.” Rast said, “Once an area is identified and a group comes for ward requesting use, the rules and regulations are already in place and they will need to comply.”
Four teen days before camping, each group must submit an application for permit in person to Dwayne M. Harris, the municipal clerk. Harris will then organize the activities with the adult leader, ensuring the groups take full advantage of the preserve.“This ordinance should be good for groups like the Boy Scouts and/or Girl Scouts but any group meeting the ordinance/rules and regulations criteria can apply for a permit to camp,” said Hubeny.AHNJ.com locates Lenape Woods in two separate areas – Lenape Woods East at the corner of East Highland Avenue and Ocean Blvd., consuming approximately 36 acres, and Lenape Woods West on the corner of Sears Avenue and East Washington Avenue, consuming approximately 15 acres.“The next step in this process is to meet with our environmental commission and scope out an area keeping in mind location within the preserve, access for all campers and emergency responders in case of an emergency,” Hubeny explained. “Police will also have to have quick access if there is a problem at the campsite.”Each camping trip can be no longer than 24 hours; no weekend or full-week trips are allowed. Cooking is acceptable only on “propane cook stoves or commercially prepared charcoal in an above ground charcoal grill or brazier.” Campfires and open flames are prohibited as well.last_img read more

Judge overturns Garda Chief Superintendent’s decision to refuse man a taxi-license

first_imgA Judge has overturned a decision by a Garda Chief Superintendent not to grant a taxi license to a Co Donegal man.Tony Pyper appeared at Falcarragh District Court today appealing a decision by Chief Supt Terry McGinn to refuse him a small PSV license to drive a taxi. The father-of-two was found guilty in January of having no car insurance, after he had originally applied for his taxi license. He was contacted by Gardai to explain that his application for the taxi license was being refused.Chief Supt McGinn met with Mr Pyper on May 24th last and explained to him that her hands were tied on the matter but advised him to get legal advice. She told the court that because Mr Pyper was applying for a license to drive people in a taxi and that he had a conviction for not having insurance she had to refuse his application. She added that she couldn’t give you a license but if the Judge saw fit to grant the license then that is a matter for the court.Solicitor Frank Dorrian told the court that his client already holds a heavy PSV license and this entitled him to drive lorries and coaches which could carry 50 people but was refused a small taxi license.“Where is the logic in that,” asked Mr Dorrian. He said the original insurance breach happened when Mr Piper, of McNeely Villas, Oldtown, Letterkenny, took his mother’s car thinking he was insured on it and that he had no other convictions.Having heard all the applications, Judge Paul Kelly said he was going to allow Mr Piper’s appeal and grant him a license. He said while it seemed to him that the Chief Superintendent was within her rights to refuse the taxi license, it did appear to be disproportionate to the conviction. He added that the court has already felt it appropriate that Mr Piper kept his driving license and that he will no doubt have difficulty getting insurance because of his previous conviction for not having insurance.Judge overturns Garda Chief Superintendent’s decision to refuse man a taxi-license was last modified: July 22nd, 2019 by StephenShare this:Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)Click to share on Reddit (Opens in new window)Click to share on Pocket (Opens in new window)Click to share on Telegram (Opens in new window)Click to share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)Click to share on Skype (Opens in new window)Click to print (Opens in new window) Tags:donegallicenserefusaltaxiTerry McGinnTony Pyperlast_img read more

Marine Mimics Found Off Thailand

first_imgLive Science reported findings from a rich seascape off the coast of Thailand: “Scientists combing through undersea fauna off Indonesia’s Papua province said Monday they had discovered dozens of new species, including a shark that walks on its fins and a shrimp that looks like a praying mantis.”    National Geographic posted even more information about this find, including pictures and video.  Apparently the shark can swim with its fins, but has a habit of “walking” along the reef surface.  “Biologists studying these sharks suggest they could serve as models for the first animals that moved from marine environments onto land,” the article says.Think of the wonderful new possibilities this opens up for evolutionary storytelling.  The shark is obviously practicing for its eventual debut on land.  And shiver me timbers, shrimp must have retained developmental genes shared by praying mantises, leading to a most remarkable case of convergent evolution.    The focus of the article was on the sad state of conservation of this area, and how local fisherman are using methods that threaten these unique species.  This time the liberals can’t blame the Christian right.(Visited 8 times, 1 visits today)FacebookTwitterPinterestSave分享0last_img read more

Stylize Your Storytelling with Character Title Cards

first_imgCharacter title cards avoid exposition while telling your audience what they need to know. Learn when (and when not) to use them in this in-depth look.Cover image via Marvel Studios.Creating a scene that is solely expository is a cardinal screenwriting sin. Exposition refers to background information that explains the current situation in a story. It’s indirect material that doesn’t naturally come up in conversation.(There are some circumstances when it’s impossible to avoid blunt exposition, such as two police detectives talking at a crime scene. Their entire conversation is naturally going to simply present facts, both to each other and to the audience.)Image via Miramax Films. When exposition would seriously interrupt the viewing experience, filmmakers seek other ways to communicate background information. One of those methods is the use of a character title card, which can also go by the name of a “boss subtitle” — a reference to the title that appears when facing a boss in a video game. The use of title cards long precedes video game boss titles. You can find some of earliest uses in old Chinese action films — a trope that would later inspire Quentin Tarantino to use character title cards in his films.Image from The Masked Avengers via Shaw Brothers Studio.Uses of The Character Title CardIf you’re considering a character title card for your project, let’s have a look at some of the primary uses of this onscreen graphic, how to use it properly, and how it can sometimes be redundantFirst and foremost, you must be aware that character title cards pull your audience out of the film world in which you’re trying to immerse them. The character title card often appears during a freeze-frame, so you now have two elements that could disengage your audience. The duration of the character title card is key to not ruining immersion. Character title cards that appear with a freeze-frame shouldn’t last more than 2-5 seconds, depending on the amount of text. The primary use of a character title card (or a boss subtitle) is to give the audience essential information that would seem trivial or forced in conversation. They can also communicate character histories that are relevant to the story.Let’s have a look at a few examplesIn the still below from 2015 film Creed, character title cards introduce several characters. What does this information do for the audience? It certainly heightens the tension, as we’ve gone from Adonis Creed stepping into the ring to spar with somebody, to Adonis Creed stepping into the ring to fight someone who has won 10 times by knockout. During the transitional moments of Adonis asking the gym owner to train him, and Adonis stepping into the ring to prove himself, there were no moments that would have been suitable to include this information. This is the perfect use of a character title card, and if you analyze the design of the card, you’ll notice it mimics a classic boxing promotional poster.A character card doesn’t have to include this much information. As we see in Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, the characters appear with their name, trait, and age. This is particularly important in regards to Scott’s new girlfriend. Scott, who is 22, is currently dating a girl in high-school. His friend Kim pokes fun at that, but we don’t find out her age through dialogue. If this dialogue had been something like “Oh my god, you’re dating a seventeen-year-old,” it wouldn’t sound as organic as “You’re dating a high schooler?” When his girlfriend arrives, we see a small character title with his girlfriend’s name and age.An important thing to note is that in these examples, cards aren’t a foreign concept to the story’s source material. Scott Pilgrim draws from video games and comics, and overlays are common during televised boxing matches. If title cards are mismatched with your narrative material, you may have to get more creative.Mise-en-Scène Title CardsWhat if you don’t want to use a freeze-frame or include an element of information that exists outside of the film world? Filmmakers can get creative and include character title elements in the scene itself. Let’s look at an excellent example from 2014’s Guardians of The Galaxy. In this scene, all of the principal characters have just been arrested, and we don’t know a lot about them save for Peter Quill. In one scene, they are undergoing processing in a space prison, and the officer is relaying information about each character to his partner. There’s no doubt about it: there’s a lot of exposition flying around, but as I mentioned earlier, there are some situations — and it usually involves crime — when it’s hard to get away from exposition. Instead of overwhelming the audience with too much expository dialogue, the filmmakers emulate a character title card — but in the form of a digital projection. The guard says, “Subject 89P13. Calls itself Rocket. The result of illegal genetic and cybernetic experiments on a lower life form.”However, onscreen, through the database projection, we see a lot more information, and it tells us that Rocket is one of the rowdiest characters of the cast: “13 counts of theft, 14 counts of mercenary activity, 15 counts of arson — has a tendency to bite.” Since this information is a projection in the scene, the fourth wall stays intact. When Not To Use The CardsAs with every great technique, there’s a time and place to use it. Character title cards may not work in specific genres, but what about films wherein the character title cards are a genre convention but their use still falls flat? For this, let’s look at 2015’s Suicide Squad.Suicide Squad was perhaps one of the most heavily criticized blockbusters of 2015, and its editing was a prime culprit (you can watch an excellent thirty-minute analysis of the editing here). The character title cards in this film were poorly done for one very particular reason: the information on the cards is not essential. Will Smith’s character Deadshot is a good example of the problem. We learn from a title card that he’s an assassin for hire, a “human arsenal,” lethal from 4,000 meters, and an expert marksman. This character title card lasts for ten seconds. However, we then proceed to a sequence wherein we see for ourselves that he’s an assassin for hire — and that he can kill a target from very far away. Sometime later, another scene demonstrates his proficiency with multiple weapons. The title card doesn’t actually convey any extra information, and when you see one for each character, it becomes fatiguing.Create Your Own Character Title CardsThankfully, YouTube has many tutorials that can teach you how to make your own character title card. Film Riot made an excellent tutorial on how you can make stylized character introductions, similar to the style of character title cards in a Guy Ritchie film — or from the 2006 film Smokin’ Aces.Personally, I’m a huge fan of the classic freeze-frame and text overlay card. I find them very elegant and timeless. What are your thoughts character title card? Let us know in the comments below.last_img read more
