This year Dr. Timothy Howard, the church’s director of music and organist, will lead the 60-voice Kirk Choir with community singers, soloists and the Friends of Music orchestra in Karl Jenkins’ poignant work The Armed Man: A Mass for Peace.Written in 1999 and premiered in 2000, the piece is essentially an anti-war piece and was commissioned by the Royal Armories Museum for London’s Millennium celebrations and dedicated to the victims of the then-ongoing Kosovo crisis. The piece moves in and out of engaging movements and motifs and offers a great variety with both tempo filled passages and moments of fantastic grandeur. Since its premiere it has become the most-performed major choral work by a living composer. The piece is based around wonderfully interwoven Bible passages, and has its foundation in the Catholic Mass. However, Jenkins also borrowed inspiration from the fifteenth century folk song “L’hommearmé” in the first and final movements. In addition, the piece includes passages from writers like Rudyard Kipling and Alfred Lord Tennyson, sung in outstanding harmonies.Interestingly, The Armed Man was one of the first major “classical” compositions by Jenkins, who began his career as a jazz and jazz-rock musician. It now holds the distinction of being the most often performed major work by any living composer. The Pasadena Presbyterian Church is located at 585 East Colorado Boulevard, corner of Madison Ave., in the Playhouse District of Pasadena. The concert is free of admission charges; a freewill offering will be taken. Information: www.ppcmusic.org Community News EVENTS & ENTERTAINMENT | FOOD & DRINK | THE ARTS | REAL ESTATE | HOME & GARDEN | WELLNESS | SOCIAL SCENE | GETAWAYS | PARENTS & KIDS faithfernandez More » ShareTweetShare on Google+Pin on PinterestSend with WhatsApp,Virtual Schools PasadenaHomes Solve Community/Gov/Pub SafetyPASADENA EVENTS & ACTIVITIES CALENDARClick here for Movie Showtimes 16 recommended0 commentsShareShareTweetSharePin it HerbeautyHe Is Totally In Love With You If He Does These 7 ThingsHerbeautyHerbeautyHerbeautyA Mental Health Chatbot Which Helps People With DepressionHerbeautyHerbeautyHerbeauty7 Most Startling Movie Moments We Didn’t Realize Were InsensitiveHerbeautyHerbeautyHerbeauty6 Strong Female TV Characters Who Deserve To Have A SpinoffHerbeautyHerbeautyHerbeautyThe Dos And Don’ts Of Tinder You Must KnowHerbeautyHerbeautyHerbeautyA 74 Year Old Fitness Enthusiast Defies All Concept Of AgeHerbeautyHerbeauty First Heatwave Expected Next Week Name (required)  Mail (required) (not be published)  Website  Community Newscenter_img Your email address will not be published. Pounding the hacks: £5 charge

first_imgPresident’s Drinks at the Oxford Union will start charging members for entry, it was decided at Standing Committee this week. The proposal, put forward by Union President James Kingston, was passed by seven votes to six at the Committee meeting on Monday evening.Kingston said that selling tickets on a first come first serve basis would reduce “hack patronage” at an event that has often been the preserve of friends of Union officers and committee members.President’s Drinks take place every week after the debate on the Thursday and offer members an opportunity to meet guest speakers. A former member of Standing Committee told Cherwell that previously there had been a clear policy that members on Secretary’s Committee could bring one guest. Those on Standing could bring two, officers could bring “about five” and the President as many they wanted. The new move will see forty tickets going on sale to Union members at a cost of £5 each, and members will only be allowed to attend two of the events per term.Although a suggestion was also put forward to charge for attendance of the dinner that precedes the drinks, Kingston said it was “a little ridiculous” that officers who were obliged to attend and entertain the speakers should be charged to do so.Further modifications to President’s Drinks were also proposed, including turning the Drinks into a smaller event with higher quality alcohol. However, the Union President maintained that both speakers and members enjoyed the weekly event. Kingston argued against calls to reduce the size of the guest list, reminding the committee that they existed “to serve the members”.The decision to introduce the £5 charge has been met with mixed reactions from Union members. One member who attended President’s Drinks regularly last year said he had used the Drinks as a forum “to hack” and stopped going once he had been successful in achieving a committee position. He agreed that charging people would hopefully attract guests “who actually wanted to meet the speaker”. This, he thought, would be “a lot fairer”.However, another argued that the “patronage” of the President would still apply since he or she selects who dines with speakers beforehand. Those at the dinner can attend the subsequent President’s Drinks. He also predicted that the Union would struggle to sell forty tickets for the Drinks each week and that this will lead to Committee members inviting along their friends. He commented, “It will very much retain a ‘Members’ Club’ atmosphere”.The ticket charge is set to be introduced in third week. Standing Committee will re-open discussions on the proposals at its next meeting on Monday.last_img read more

7 Tools for Over-the-Air iOS Beta Testing

first_imgIn December, we shared information about one of iOS’s best-kept secrets: ad hoc distribution for mobile apps. The feature, intended for developers and enterprise use, was introduced in iOS 4.0 to allow developers to distribute mobile apps over-the-air to end users. In an enterprise scenario, the end users would be the company employees, but for consumer applications, the obvious target is beta testers.Previously, beta testers had to download the test app to their computer, unzip the files, drag the app to iTunes and then sync their iPhone with iTunes. With the ad hoc method, installing an app is as easy as clicking a link. But as it turns out, Apple’s ad hoc method isn’t the only solution out there.I was glad to see the original ReadWriteMobile post was shared on Hacker News, where it received a lot of commentary. But in reading through the discussion, I learned there were quite a few other methods for ad hoc distribution being used, too. Developers were talking about the differences and benefits of the other services and it occurred to me that the names being bandied about deserved repeating on a larger forum – that being here, on this website. In case you missed the off-site discussion, you can follow it here on Hacker News.As for the suggestions, we’ve listed them below, with links provided.1. AppDropAppDrop is a program for OTA, one-click install testing introduced in November via AppMakr.com. To use the service, developers can use AppMakr’s UDID app to capture users’ unique phone ID, then AppDrop emails them a link to download the app. When clicked, the app installs over-the-air. 2. AppSendrLike AppDrop, AppSendr also provides tools for OTA installs. This service provides a Web and command line app that lets developers share ad hoc builds with testers – and it’s free.3. Using Bash Scripts to Automate OTA App DistributionDeveloper Basil Shkara said he wrote some bash scripts a few months ago to automate the process. He detailed the entire project here on his blog, including the scripts themselves.4. TestFlightA service called TestFlight (now in beta) also allows developers to send out OTA installs to beta testers. We’ve covered the service in the past, here. TestFlight also helps to collect UDIDs and can send out push notifications when updates are available. The Rise and Rise of Mobile Payment Technology Why IoT Apps are Eating Device Interfaces What it Takes to Build a Highly Secure FinTech … Role of Mobile App Analytics In-App Engagement 7. Apple’s MethodLast, but not least, is the official method provided by Apple in iOS 4.0 and up. As we’ve previously covered that in detail, you can refer to the older post here for more info on how you to set up your own ad hoc distro for beta testing purposes. 5. BetaBuilderBetaBuilder is a Mac OS X tool designed to simplify creating and distributing beta releases of iOS apps. It’s available here on github. It’s similar to TestFlight, but not as comprehensive. However, it is free and the source is available. You can learn more about it here.6. HockeyHockey is an iOS developer framework from buzzworks.de that provides support for ad hoc OTA installations. It consists of a server and client framework and provides a Web interface for the beta testers. Hockey is available here on github. Read more about it here. Stylize Your Storytelling with Character Title Cards

first_imgCharacter title cards avoid exposition while telling your audience what they need to know. Learn when (and when not) to use them in this in-depth look.Cover image via Marvel Studios.Creating a scene that is solely expository is a cardinal screenwriting sin. Exposition refers to background information that explains the current situation in a story. It’s indirect material that doesn’t naturally come up in conversation.(There are some circumstances when it’s impossible to avoid blunt exposition, such as two police detectives talking at a crime scene. Their entire conversation is naturally going to simply present facts, both to each other and to the audience.)Image via Miramax Films. When exposition would seriously interrupt the viewing experience, filmmakers seek other ways to communicate background information. One of those methods is the use of a character title card, which can also go by the name of a “boss subtitle” — a reference to the title that appears when facing a boss in a video game. The use of title cards long precedes video game boss titles. You can find some of earliest uses in old Chinese action films — a trope that would later inspire Quentin Tarantino to use character title cards in his films.Image from The Masked Avengers via Shaw Brothers Studio.Uses of The Character Title CardIf you’re considering a character title card for your project, let’s have a look at some of the primary uses of this onscreen graphic, how to use it properly, and how it can sometimes be redundantFirst and foremost, you must be aware that character title cards pull your audience out of the film world in which you’re trying to immerse them. The character title card often appears during a freeze-frame, so you now have two elements that could disengage your audience. The duration of the character title card is key to not ruining immersion. Character title cards that appear with a freeze-frame shouldn’t last more than 2-5 seconds, depending on the amount of text. The primary use of a character title card (or a boss subtitle) is to give the audience essential information that would seem trivial or forced in conversation. They can also communicate character histories that are relevant to the story.Let’s have a look at a few examplesIn the still below from 2015 film Creed, character title cards introduce several characters. What does this information do for the audience? It certainly heightens the tension, as we’ve gone from Adonis Creed stepping into the ring to spar with somebody, to Adonis Creed stepping into the ring to fight someone who has won 10 times by knockout. During the transitional moments of Adonis asking the gym owner to train him, and Adonis stepping into the ring to prove himself, there were no moments that would have been suitable to include this information. This is the perfect use of a character title card, and if you analyze the design of the card, you’ll notice it mimics a classic boxing promotional poster.A character card doesn’t have to include this much information. As we see in Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, the characters appear with their name, trait, and age. This is particularly important in regards to Scott’s new girlfriend. Scott, who is 22, is currently dating a girl in high-school. His friend Kim pokes fun at that, but we don’t find out her age through dialogue. If this dialogue had been something like “Oh my god, you’re dating a seventeen-year-old,” it wouldn’t sound as organic as “You’re dating a high schooler?” When his girlfriend arrives, we see a small character title with his girlfriend’s name and age.An important thing to note is that in these examples, cards aren’t a foreign concept to the story’s source material. Scott Pilgrim draws from video games and comics, and overlays are common during televised boxing matches. If title cards are mismatched with your narrative material, you may have to get more creative.Mise-en-Scène Title CardsWhat if you don’t want to use a freeze-frame or include an element of information that exists outside of the film world? Filmmakers can get creative and include character title elements in the scene itself. Let’s look at an excellent example from 2014’s Guardians of The Galaxy. In this scene, all of the principal characters have just been arrested, and we don’t know a lot about them save for Peter Quill. In one scene, they are undergoing processing in a space prison, and the officer is relaying information about each character to his partner. There’s no doubt about it: there’s a lot of exposition flying around, but as I mentioned earlier, there are some situations — and it usually involves crime — when it’s hard to get away from exposition. Instead of overwhelming the audience with too much expository dialogue, the filmmakers emulate a character title card — but in the form of a digital projection. The guard says, “Subject 89P13. Calls itself Rocket. The result of illegal genetic and cybernetic experiments on a lower life form.”However, onscreen, through the database projection, we see a lot more information, and it tells us that Rocket is one of the rowdiest characters of the cast: “13 counts of theft, 14 counts of mercenary activity, 15 counts of arson — has a tendency to bite.” Since this information is a projection in the scene, the fourth wall stays intact. When Not To Use The CardsAs with every great technique, there’s a time and place to use it. Character title cards may not work in specific genres, but what about films wherein the character title cards are a genre convention but their use still falls flat? For this, let’s look at 2015’s Suicide Squad.Suicide Squad was perhaps one of the most heavily criticized blockbusters of 2015, and its editing was a prime culprit (you can watch an excellent thirty-minute analysis of the editing here). The character title cards in this film were poorly done for one very particular reason: the information on the cards is not essential. Will Smith’s character Deadshot is a good example of the problem. We learn from a title card that he’s an assassin for hire, a “human arsenal,” lethal from 4,000 meters, and an expert marksman. This character title card lasts for ten seconds. However, we then proceed to a sequence wherein we see for ourselves that he’s an assassin for hire — and that he can kill a target from very far away. Sometime later, another scene demonstrates his proficiency with multiple weapons. The title card doesn’t actually convey any extra information, and when you see one for each character, it becomes fatiguing.Create Your Own Character Title CardsThankfully, YouTube has many tutorials that can teach you how to make your own character title card. Film Riot made an excellent tutorial on how you can make stylized character introductions, similar to the style of character title cards in a Guy Ritchie film — or from the 2006 film Smokin’ Aces.Personally, I’m a huge fan of the classic freeze-frame and text overlay card. I find them very elegant and timeless. What are your thoughts character title card? Let us know in the comments below.last_img read more
