FRISCO, Texas – Southeastern Louisiana’s Anthony Cordero and New Orleans’ Arina Kleshchukova are the Southland Conference Cross Country Athletes of the Week, the league announced Tuesday.Cordero competed over the weekend at the Mississippi College Invitational in Clinton, Miss., securing a third-place individual finish. The award marks the first of the season for Cordero. SLU has now completed its regular-season schedule and will return to the course at the Southland Conference Championship in Conway, Ark., Nov. 1.Kleshchukova captured her fourth weekly honor of the season after leading the Privateers with a second-place individual finish at the Florida State Invitational this past weekend. The junior competed against a field of more than 200 runners, finishing with a 17:29.9 in the 5k race. Kleshchukova and her UNO squad have also completed their regular-season slate and will hit the course once again at Southland Conference Championship in Conway, Ark., Nov. 1.Men’s Athlete of the Week: Anthony Cordero, Southeastern Louisiana – Jr. – El Paso, TexasCordero took third place in the 8k event at the Mississippi College Invitational over the weekend, crossing the finish line with a 25:23.22. The junior has now finished among the top-10 competitors in three of his four races this season, with his latest effort boosting the Lions to a fourth-place team finish.Honorable Mention: Laban Kandie, Houston Baptist; Kolyn Saltzman, New Orleans.Women’s Athlete of the Week: Arina Kleshchukova, New Orleans – Jr. – Bishkek, KyrgyzstanKleshchukova set a new personal best with her second-place finish against a stacked field at the Florida State Invitational on Saturday. She completed the 5k race with a time of 17:29.9 against a field of 224 competitors. Her time stands fourth in program history for the 5k distance. Kleshchukova has now recorded four-straight top-two finishes, including three individual victories.Honorable Mention: Johanna Drew, Houston Baptist; Isabella Hudson, Northwestern State; Sophie Daigle, Southeastern Louisiana.Southland weekly award winners are nominated and voted upon by each school’s sports information director.
