Police Stripping Cars of Tinted Windows

first_imgAmidst the fight to contain and prevent the Ebola Virus Disease (EVD), which has claimed more than 500 lives, Police officers assigned at the Topoe Road Police Station launched a drive over the weekend against cars with nontransparent windows.A police officer, who asked not to be named, said the order came in the wake following a tip concerning secret burials, especially along the Somalia Drive,  of persons who may have died from the virus. The officer told the Daily Observer in an exclusive interview that the headquarters of the Liberia National Police (LNP) has ordered officers assigned at the Topoe Road Police Depot to be vigilant about the growing trend of corpses being taken for burial, in many cases, using vehicles with tinted glasses.“The LNP asked us to remove all artificial coverings, nontransparent and colorful glasses, from windows of cars,” the officer said.Though he was not specific, another officer who also spoke anonymously said this instruction is strictly be executed in and around Islamic communities, which are known for ‘quick burials.’When contacted, LNP Spokesperson Sam Collins neither confirmed nor denied the order, but said it is illegal for cars to use unclear, black, colored, and non-transparent glasses.Mr. Collins noted that only security personnel are legally entitled to use tinted windows, as well as some governmental officials.A business man, known as Mr. Chebli has appealed to the LNP to consider and exclude cars whose windshields, side windows, or rear windows had built-in or ‘natural tints’.Other vehicle owners concur, saying that windows and windshields with built-in tinted windows have to be removed altogether and replaced with new, transparent ones.  They claim that because there has been sudden supply shortage and subsequent price increase of new glasses since outbreak of the deadly Ebola virus, these may be hard to find.Share this:Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)last_img
