India’s only concern in ODI series vs Australia is 3rd seamer: Sunil Gavaskar

The series is currently locked at 1-1 after India rode on captain Virat Kohli’s magnificent 39th century and MS Dhoni’s unbeaten fifty to beat Australia in the second ODI in Adelaide on Tuesday. Kohli struck 104 off 112 balls while Dhoni remained unbeaten on 55 off 54 deliveries to help India chase down a challenging 299-run target at the Adelaide Oval. Australia had won the first ODI by 34 runs in Sydney.India have missed the services of Jasprit Bumrah, who has been rested for the ODI series in Australia. In his absence, India included Khaleel Ahmed in the first ODI while Mohammed Siraj played as the third pacer in the second.Khaleel, who made his ODI debut at the Asia Cup last year, conceded 55 runs from his 8 overs. Khaleel was dropped in the 2nd ODI and was replaced by Siraj. But he too proved costly.Siraj, who became India’s 225th ODI player, had a horror debut. Siraj went wicketless in his full quota of 10 overs and conceded 76 runs in the process, which is the second-worst debut for an Indian bowler. He was subjected to numerous trolls on social media after his performance with the ball.Gavaskar said India may opt to play only two fast bowlers in the series-deciding Melbourne ODI.”The only problem in the bowling department in this series is India’s third pacer. In the first ODI, Khaleel Ahmed was expensive and in the second ODI Mohammed Siraj gave away too many runs. That is the only area of concern,” Gavaskar told Sports Tak.advertisement”India’s batting is good, fielding is also good. Melbourne is a big ground, India may play only two seamers and three spinners. Yuzvendra Chahal can be given a chance in Melbourne,” he added.Gavaskar also lauded Dhoni for his match-winning knock.”When a senior player is not in good form then everyone is concerned. But the way MS Dhoni batted he showed that he still has it in him. Maybe not what he used to be with the bat but he proved he was no less efficient,” Gavaskar said.Gavaskar said the victory in Adelaide will boost India’s confidence ahead of the third ODI.”A victory is a victory whether it is 3-0 or 2-1. Winning a series is more important. The way India bounced back in the Test series after losing in Perth in the same way India bounced back in Adelaide after losing the first ODI in Sydney. This victory will give India more confidence going into the Melbourne ODI for the series decider,” he said. After the tour of Australia, India travel to New Zealand for a limited-overs series in New Zealand where the two sides play 5 ODIs and three Twenty20 Internationals from January 23.Also Read | Rishabh Pant for World Cup 2019?
