Welsh government to invest £15m in red meat and dairy

first_imgWelsh government to invest £15m in red meat and dairyPosted By: Martin Whiteon: July 23, 2018In: Agriculture, Dairy, Food, IndustriesPrintEmailThe Welsh government has announced that it will provide approximately £15 million in funding to support the Welsh dairy and red meat industries in the face of Brexit.Rural affairs cabinet secretary Lesley Griffiths announced the move at this year’s Royal Welsh Show, one of the UK’s largest agriculture events.According to Griffiths, £9.2 million will be made available to the Hybu Cig Cymru (HCC) Red Meat Development Programme, which provides support to farmers through lessons at demonstration farms, discussion groups and knowledge transfer officers, to improve competitiveness in the sector.Meanwhile, a further £6.5 million will be invested in two projects which will seek to “improve the profitability and resilience of the Welsh dairy sector.”Griffiths said the investment is an opportunity to “forge a new consensus on the role of farmers in Wales”.“The way we manage our land matters, especially if we are to produce outcomes of importance to everyone in Wales.“The current CAP does not help us to achieve these outcomes and is not designed to realise the full value of the land.”The move comes as industry figures voice their concerns about the potential impact of Brexit on Welsh agriculture, as HCC chairman Kevin Roberts claimed that a ‘no deal’ Brexit outcome would be “catastrophic” for Wales’s red meat industry. He said: “We have consistently warned of the potential consequences of a hard, chaotic Brexit, and I would like to sound that warning yet again.“It would provide a sudden, seismic shock to our red meat sector. Tariffs at any level would be a tourniquet on trade – and the unthinkable, a no deal Brexit, would be catastrophic for our stakeholders.”The National Farmer’s Union (NFU) Cymru and the British Meat Processors Association (BMPA) also released a joint statement at the show highlighting the importance of the red meat industry to the Welsh economy.NFU Cymru president John Davies and chief executive of the BMPA Nick Allen said: “The BMPA and NFU Cymru have a shared ambition for Wales to be a world-leading producing and processing country of red meat.“We want to ensure that the desire of the consumer to have affordable supplies of high quality, fully traceable food is delivered by the Welsh red meat supply chain.“We are calling on Welsh Government to share our vision and to work with us to deliver policies that see us build and grow the market for PGI Welsh lamb and beef.”Share with your network: Tags: agricultureBrexitDairyred meatWaleslast_img read more

In US evangelical capital a new progressiveness and differing views on Israel

And I read almost the same words in the newspaper as I read in the Bible. Twitter View gallery “We’ve been through all this before,” said Bruce McCluggage, a former evangelical who now identifies as a “follower of Christ”. Throughout his youth, in the 1970s and 80s, McCluggage was part of the Christian movement that interpreted the signs of Israel as evidence of the last days. But for McCluggage, after a slow-burn of things not coming to pass, that conviction slowly faded.“It was a classic tool used to witness to people,” he recalled. “We’d ask: ‘If Jesus returned today, would you go to Heaven?’ It was kind of a threat … and we thought, with Israel coming together, we could hasten the return of Jesus.” With long blond hair and a stout little chin beard, McCluggage still looks like a member of the California Jesus People, a movement of post-hippie Christians who were obsessed with end times prophecy. (The term “left behind” comes from a popular song of the era, I Wish We’d All Been Ready, by Larry Norman, the godfather of Christian rock.) He still attends church, prays and reads his Bible, but has slowly distanced himself from the Christian right.Today, he sits in the Wild Goose Meeting House in downtown Colorado Springs, a venue known for its “post-evangelical” or “progressive evangelical” contingent. It looks like any other hip modern coffeehouse, serving expensive pour-over coffee and craft beers to an indie rock soundtrack. Books with titles like Christianity After Religion and The Rebirthing of God line the shelves; events like What Would Jesus Brew? – beer-centric Bible study – regularly take place. The hallmarks of the old Christian rightwing culture are still present: it’s very white, middle-upper class, and peppered with soldiers in fatigues. The town has five military installations. But the shop is representative of a shifting attitude toward Christianity in downtown Colorado Springs – one that doesn’t have much interest in the apocalyptic rhetoric surrounding Israel.“There are plenty of young millennials downtown that would call themselves evangelical, even conservative, but are a very different breed from their parents,” said Russ Ware, co-owner of the Wild Goose, who grew up evangelical but no longer identifies that way. “They’re mostly not Trump supporters; they have a spectrum of views on LGBT issues, and they’re not on board with the end times theology … There is definitely a kind of end times fatigue with this generation.” Facebook In the 1990s, Christopher Stroop was one such evangelical. He has now abandoned his faith and leads a social media campaign seeking to galvanize “exvangelicals” with hashtags like #emptythepews and #raptureanxiety. He said he had “definitely seen a lot of ex-evangelicals talking about being triggered by the Jerusalem news”.It’s not only post-evangelicals who are dubious about the end times scenario. Kimberly Troup believes Israel will be the center of Armageddon, but she doesn’t think it’s all happening now. The author of her father’s favourite book released follow-ups that predicted ever-later dates for the Earth’s demise. She is dubious about anyone who claims to know when the world will end.“The great fear was moving the embassy to Jerusalem would be the start of World War Three and Armageddon,” she said. “There’s a little rumbling, but nothing new. We’ve had this for 600 years. It’s gonna be business as usual … “It feels worse than it is because you only hear about the bad stuff on the media.” Topics US politics Share on LinkedIncenter_img At the opening ceremony, two of the American speakers were evangelical superstars: Pastor Robert Jeffress, the author of several doomsday books about Israel, and John Hagee, who interpreted recent lunar eclipses as evidence that the end times were nigh. The Fox News personality Jeanine Pirro, meanwhile, declared that Trump had “fulfilled biblical prophecy”.The ceremony coincided with massive protests, in which 60 Palestinians were killed by Israeli forces.Thousands of miles away, in her home outside Colorado Springs, Kimberly Troup sat in a cluttered basement office. She is an evangelical Christian who takes to heart the Bible verse in which God speaks of the Jewish nation: “I will bless those who bless you, and whoever curses you I will curse.”Accordingly, she has devoted 22 years to Israel. She is now the US director of Christian Friends of Israeli Communities, an advocacy group with a Zionist ideology. Two other CFIC employees work with her. This week, they have been very busy. Ever since she was a child, in Kentucky, Troup has been immersed in Israel. Her father saw the creation of the state in 1948 and the six-day war of 1967 as evidence of biblical prophecy surrounding the end of the world. Troup believes in such prophecies, though she does not pretend to know when they will occur. She sees it as her Christian duty to care for Israel, to defend it against “Arabs” who are “not interested in peace”.As she described her position an associate, previously silent, spoke up, quoting the book of Isaiah: “You who call on the Lord, give yourselves no rest, and give him no rest till he establishes Jerusalem and makes her the praise of the earth.” Christians around the world have always had an intense interest in the Holy Land. It has often been believed that the restoration of the Jews in Palestine will bring about a holy war between good and evil (as prophesied in the Book of Revelation), after which God will set up a holy kingdom on Earth. In the 1970s, Troup’s father was one of millions who purchased a book called The Late Great Planet Earth, which interpreted events in Israel as evidence that the great war of Armageddon would happen by the late 1980s. The non-fiction bestseller of the decade, it was followed by the wildly popular end times conspiracy tome The New World Order, by the televangelist Pat Robertson, and then the Left Behind novels and films, which concerned violent clashes in Israel that would bring about biblical prophecy. To outsiders, these pieces of doomsday pop culture seem like far-fetched lunacy. For millions of Christians, they are a roadmap to the end of the world.‘We’ve been through all this before’The recent move of the US embassy has solidified the notion – not shared by the Palestinian people – that Jerusalem is the capital of Israel, an essential piece of the end times puzzle. In a recent poll of evangelicals from LifeWay, more than half of respondents said end times prophecy was the reason they supported Israel. However, even in Colorado Springs, which in the heyday of the George W Bush administration was unofficially known as the “Evangelical Vatican”, such interpretations of the move are not universal. 20 Million Strong – Fuel Rewards Program Doubles Membership in Just Two

first_imgThe program has saved its members $1.7 Billion in fuel costs over seven years, reinforcing the power of the programThe Fuel Rewards program, one of the country’s top-ranked loyalty programs that connects leading national and regional brands with millions of consumers who enjoy earning cents-per-gallon savings at a variety of issuing partners such as rideshares, travel, restaurants and Shell, and redeeming those discounts at participating Shell stations nationwide, is celebrating two major milestones this month. The program has grown from 10 million members in 2017 to over 20 million members and has helped U.S. consumers save more than $1.7 billion on the cost of fuel.Marketing Technology News: US E-Commerce Trends Linked to Nielsen’s Amazon Prime Day Analytics“Consumers have shown their preference for cents-per-gallon rewards time and again through changes in their spending behaviors,” said Brandon Logsdon, senior vice president, Marketing Cloud Solutions at PDI. “The brands that participate in the program see the power of the currency and the flexibility of the platform to meet their specific marketing goals. Our 20 million Fuel Rewards members are a testament to the success of Instant Gold Status that launched at Shell in June 2017 and the program’s ability to drive consumer participation, which translates to incremental revenue for participating brands.”Creating Value for Brands and RetailersConsumer membership and engagement in the Fuel Rewards program has grown each year since it was launched by Excentus in 2012. Excentus was acquired by PDI in 2018, and the Fuel Rewards program is now powered and run by PDI Marketing Cloud Solutions. The Fuel Rewards program’s popularity among consumers has attracted brands across different categories to become participating merchants. And, with more fuel savings passed on to loyal customers, brands and retailers benefit from a growing member base, ongoing loyalty and increased brand awareness. The Fuel Rewards program also leverages its substantial investment in marketing technology – including next-generation customer relationship management (CRM), data analytics, mobile app development, geotargeting and dynamic digital customer engagement tools – to help brands meet their marketing objectives by participating in the Fuel Rewards program. Also Read: Amazon Prime Day – Retailers, Are You Prepared? The Power of C-Store CustomersAs 89 percent of consumers have visited a convenience store in the last six months, the c-store customer is the American shopper, making the Fuel Rewards program a natural fit across both national brands and consumers. Even more, the c-store loyalty member is proven to be more valuable than non-members because they spend more and visit more. The upcoming PDI 2019 C-Store Shopper Report reveals the value of c-store loyalty members and demonstrates why brands should actively engage this market.Popular Even When Gas Prices FluctuateMembership in the Fuel Rewards program continued to grow at a time when average per-gallon gas prices fluctuated from $3.99 in early 2012 to the current U.S. average of $2.72. According to the Road to Rewards survey, consumers say it’s important to them to save on fuel costs both when gas prices are rising (73 percent) and falling (58 percent), reinforcing the power of Fuel Rewards’ cents-per-gallon savings and consumer preference for this loyalty currency. Also Read: Retailers Can Dominate Amazon Prime Day With Lightning-Quick and Live-Time Campaign Results Brandon Logsdoncloudcrmdata analyticsFuel RewardsMarketing Technology NewsNewsPDI Previous ArticleKyndi Secures $20 Million in Funding Led by Intel Capital to Advance Industry’s First Explainable AI PlatformNext ArticleNintex Recognizes Top Channel Partners for Business Transformation and Impact 20 Million Strong – Fuel Rewards Program Doubles Membership in Just Two Years Business WireJuly 15, 2019, 4:20 pmJuly 15, 2019 last_img read more

CitrusAd enables brands and agencies to promote product listings and display media right at the point of purchase and track media spend through to sale.In addition to offering larger retailers their own private media platform, Mi9 and CitrusAd will create a marketplace solution enabling retailers of any size to join, gaining access to national media dollars due to the size and scale of the aggregated marketplace reach.Marketing Technology News: Fastbase New 3.0 Extension to Google Analytics Boosts Lead Generation to a New High Level for B2B companies“The Mi9 and CitrusAd partnership brings together a roster of over 500 retailers across 30,000 stores, putting the platform on par with major tier 1 players to compete for billions in national media dollars due to the collective scale,” said Mi9 CEO, Neil Moses. “We are excited to bring a highly differentiated digital media monetization option to retailers, providing both CitrusAd’s best of breed ad tech and immediate access to media revenue via the marketplace solution.”Mi9 will migrate existing retailers and add future retailers to CitrusAd’s platform rapidly. Siddharth Says Picking Netflixs Leila was No Brainer and Selfish Decision

first_imgSiddharth maybe one of the most versatile performers in the industry but he believes fame and stardom of an actor are not enough to save a project if it is not good. That’s the reason why, the actor said, he has always strived to work with talented people. His decision to make his streaming debut with Leila was also inspired by this philosophy. “I always look for places where I can learn something. And that was the selfish motivation behind picking a show like this. It was a no brainer,” he told PTI in an interview. “I act in films so that I can be someone that I’m not… It’s always been about trying to do something that’s not been done before,” he added. The actor, who has worked in both South and in the Hindi film industry on films such as Aaytha Ezhuthu, Bommarillu and Rang De Basanti, said talented names like Deepa Mehta, Shanker Raman and Pawan Kumar were enough for him to board the series.Siddharth said, “The job of an actor is generally not very safe or satisfying. Because you’re not the first person to have the idea, you’re not the first person to execute the idea. You’re just a pawn. So your career or your work can only be as good as the other people.” “Having said that, I’ve always pursued being around people and content where my contribution is relevant because I’ve enjoyed my bursts of stardom and appreciation. But I’ve never been in a misconception that I can make anything fly. I don’t believe my stardom or my talent can save something that’s not good,” he added. The actor is quite vocal against the right-wing politics on his Twitter handle but in the dystopian thriller, Siddharth plays someone who is a part of the authority. “I’m open about the kind of politics I don’t like… But yeah, it’s a pretty interesting analogy that it (the role) is dire opposite of what I am,” he said in reply to a question.Siddharth said his social media platform is for him to express himself in the “purest form”. “I generally try not to do that (thinking before tweeting). Because I like to believe I’ve reached a certain point and certain opinions in my life after a lot of thought. So once you reach that point, you don’t need to think every time before you speak. “It’s when you become a politician and you have to be careful every day about what you speak, that it is a problem. Otherwise, you represent yourself in your purest form,” he said.Leila, starring Huma Qureshi in the lead role and based on Prayaag Akbar’s best-selling novel of the same name, started streaming on Netflix from Friday.Follow @News18Movies for more Deepa MehtaHuma QureshiLeilaLeila review First Published: June 14, 2019, 4:50 PM ISTlast_img read more

Lok Sabha Election Results 2019 Opposition Sore Losers Desperation Over VVPAT Issue

first_img Chirag PaswanEVMLJPLok Janshakti Party First Published: May 22, 2019, 4:43 PM IST New Delhi: Union Minister and BJP ally Ram Vilas Paswan Wednesday dubbed the opposition “sore losers” and claimed that their “desperation” over the VVPAT issue was an indication of their defeat in the Lok Sabha polls.Leaders of 22 opposition parties met the Election Commission on Tuesday ahead of the Lok Sabha election results and demanded verification of VVPAT slips of randomly-selected polling stations before the counting of votes begins Thursday. The EC on Wednesday rejected the demand. “I have been saying for many months now that when the opposition heads towards defeat it starts complaining about EVM. Those opposing EVMs want to drag India back to the time when money and muscle power decided elections. The Supreme Court has heard the issue four times already. They are now concocting stories in the face of impending defeat,” he said.”When you win, EVMs are alright. But when you lose, allegations about EVM manipulation arise. This kind of pessimistic attitude of the opposition will hurt the Constitution and also the Indian democracy,” Paswan said.To a question on the future of his son in an NDA government, the Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) chief said that Chirag Paswan had all the capabilities to be a Union minister.Taking a dig at the opposition parties trying to project a united face, Ram Vilas Paswan said, “UPA has never been formed. So how will they fight (an election). We had a well-synchronized team. They are headless… Nobody listens to the other in the opposition.””If the Congress and the AAP can’t strike an understanding for seven seats (in Delhi) how will they do so for 543?” he posed. The LJP chief also said the “impending victory of the NDA” in the Lok Sabha polls is due to Prime Minister Narendra Modi.”The prime minister alone should get credit of this victory since the entire election revolved around him, debate on inflation or corruption did not matter,” Ram Vilas Paswan said. last_img read more

LG V30 early teardown puts the focus on the cameras

first_imgJerryRigEverything’s Zack Nelson is perhaps best known for his scratch, burn, and bend tests, but he also does teardowns and, depending on how those turn out, puts them back together again. It seems that his antics have caught the attention of LG, who has invited the YouTuber to put its latest LG V30 to the test. Not for a stress test, however, but for a teardown and back. But unlike most teardowns, this one was designed to put a heavy emphasis on how great the V30’s cameras are. Nelson notes right from the start that the teardown video, the phone, and the trip to LG HQ, was all sponsored by LG. His opinions, however, are purely his own, he says. And he does seem to have very high opinions of the V30, especially in the camera department.Unlike the V20 before it, the V30 goes back to an uneven sensor setup, with the main camera going with a 16 megapixel sensor with OIS and the second camera with only 13 megapixels and no OIS. The 16 megapixel one is notable for having the biggest aperture on any smartphone so far at f/1.6 and for using glass lenses instead of plastic. This takes it closer to being a “mini DSLR” and, based on footage recorded by Nelson, that does show.As far as teardowns go, the LG V30 looks to be very promising. There is a good amount of waterproof adhesive, but not as much as the Galaxy Note 8. Nelson also praises the generous use of gold contacts instead of soldered wires, making the parts very modular and, therefore, easy to replace. One interesting bit about the LG V30 that Nelson tore down and successfully built up again is that it has both wireless charging and Quad DAC output. The LG G6 only sported one or the other, depending on the market. This gives hopes that US buyers will indeed have both features available to them, when it does finally land in the market. Google Assistant update takes SHIELD TV out a whole new door

first_imgAsk to open apps, play songs, access mediaBefore now, saying OK Google to the NVIDIA SHIELD didn’t do a whole lot unless you’d already selected the Google Search button at the head of the home screen. Opening apps through this screen worked, basic app launching worked, and searching worked. Visual Cards (see below) also appeared, but not in any app, only appearing on the Google Search screen. With this update, Google Assistant spreads its wings out and around the entire Android TV experience. Now whenever the user wishes, “OK Google” summons the beast, and the power of all media control and the internet’s boundless wealth of useless information is at your command! No buttons neededAs it is with my Pixel phone, so too does the SHIELD controller awaken the Google Assistant when I say “OK Google” within range of its microphones. The microphones in the newest SHIELD TV Remote and Game Controller are extremely sensitive. I’ve never had trouble getting them to hear me – it’s once they start listening for commands that can get a bit of mixed results.SEE THIS: NVIDIA SHIELD TV Review (Gen 2)Especially when you’ve got a party going on in your apartment – or you have a toddler or two who like to talk to Google. LUCKY FOR YOU there’s a way to turn off the “say OK Google anytime” feature on the SHIELD if you do so wish. Simply move down to the microphone icon at the bottom of the SHIELD’s home screen and make with the switches.Of note – the SHIELD Controller (gaming controller) supports hands-free Google Assistant activation, while the SHIELD Remote does not. The SHIELD Remote (simple TV controller device) requires that its microphone button be pressed before the user begins saying commands or asking Google for information. Visual CardsGoogle Assistant on TV provides a new way to view Google’s responses to queries – this with expanded information where applicable. This intelligent TV overlay system is optimized for this size and format, and is not presented in the same way on any other platform. This system is ideal for finding information about whatever actor is in the movie you’re watching – whether or not you know their name offhand.Search NestingNested searches are enabled with this update, including such gems as “OK Google, show me the top album of the year” – response from Google – followed by “from the year 1978.” Google should give you a response like “Some Girls” by The Rolling Stones, or if Google really wants to get deep, it’ll suggest “Q: Are We Not Men? A: We Are Devo!”Samsung SmartThings time is soonThis update makes way for connectivity with Samsung SmartThings smart home devices, too. Release of all abilities requires the release of the Samsung SmartThings Link as well as the official Samsung SmartThings app. Both of these will be “launched soon” according to NVIDIA. Once released, the SHIELD will work with “hundreds of smart devices” throughout the user’s smart home – with ecosystems like Z-wave and ZigBee.Voice First Wrap-upThis update turns the SHIELD TV (aka NVIDIA SHIELD Android TV) into a smart hub for all things Google Assistant-connected. That in turn enables a whole lot of other connections – like using IFTTT to connect saying “OK Google, Lake Minnetonka” to a purple rain of color in your living room VIA Nanoleaf Aurora lighting panels.ICYMI: SHIELD TV Gen 2 hands-on at CES 2017This is like having a Google Home device with a display – where the display is my high definition television. There’s not a lot left wanting in this equation when I’m looking for a central control point for all smart home devices – all with voice control.Does this update make the SHIELD TV a real Apple TV killer? Not so much. Not because Apple TV is better, but because SHIELD TV, in my opinion, is in a completely different realm from Apple TV. They might cost the same, and they might both run Netflix (as well as most/all other important TV-based apps), but for everyone outside of the strictly-Apple-only hardware ecosystem, SHIELD TV is best. NVIDIA’s SHIELD TV device is the best smart tv device in the world today. That’s both within and without the Android TV ecosystem, just as much and more now here in 2017 than back in 2015. As overlord in the realm of smart television products, SHIELD TV’s stood alone for the past two years straight. Now with Google Assistant inside, SHIELD TV becomes all the better. Today NVIDIA SHIELD’s latest update brought with it Google Assistant in full effect. The results are much like we saw and experienced earlier this year at CES 2017. This means “OK Google” Google Assistant support – along with NVIDIA’s implementation of the full-on latest version of Google’s vision of the ideal smart TV environment using Android. This is also the “first-ever hands-free access to an Assistant for TV” – so says NVIDIA.
